The short answer: April–May and September–October. But China is huge — the best time depends on where you’re going.

Best Time by Region

China spans subarctic to tropical. Pick the right season for your destination.

Northern China

Beijing, Xi'an, Harbin, Datong

Best:

April–May, September–October

Avoid:

July–August (extreme heat and humidity), December–February (bitterly cold unless you want Harbin Ice Festival)

Four distinct seasons. Central heating in winter. Dust storms in March. The Great Wall and Forbidden City are best in autumn with clear skies.

Eastern China

Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing

Best:

March–May, October–November

Avoid:

July–August (35°C+ and oppressively humid)

Subtropical. No central heating south of the Yangtze — winter indoors is chilly. Spring brings cherry blossoms at West Lake. Autumn has ideal temperatures for walking.

Southern China

Guilin, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hong Kong

Best:

October–March (dry season)

Avoid:

June–September (typhoon and monsoon season)

Warm year-round. Guilin's Li River is most photogenic in April–May when the rice terraces are bright green. Winter is mild and crowd-free.

Southwest China

Chengdu, Kunming, Lijiang, Dali

Best:

March–May, September–November

Avoid:

July–August (heavy rain in Sichuan)

Kunming is called the "Spring City" — pleasant year-round at 15–25°C. Chengdu is cloudy most of the year. Lijiang and Dali are best in spring and autumn.

Western China

Tibet, Xinjiang, Zhangye, Dunhuang

Best:

May–October

Avoid:

November–March (extreme cold, some areas closed)

High altitude means intense UV year-round — sunglasses and sunscreen are essential. Tibet requires a permit. Xinjiang hits 40°C+ in midsummer.

Holidays to Plan Around

These are the times when 1.4 billion people travel domestically. Plan accordingly.

Lunar New Year (Spring Festival)

Late January or February (date varies)Impact: Very High

The biggest holiday in China. 1.4 billion people travel. Trains and flights sell out weeks ahead. Prices spike 30–50%. Incredible atmosphere if you're in a city, but extremely busy.

Labour Day Holiday

1–5 MayImpact: High

Five-day break. Tourist sites get crowded, especially the Great Wall, West Lake, and Zhangjiajie. Book accommodation and transport well in advance.

Golden Week (National Day)

1–7 OctoberImpact: Very High

The single busiest travel period in the world. Over 800 million domestic trips. Popular sites have multi-hour queues. Hotels charge peak rates. If possible, travel after October 7th instead.

Mid-Autumn Festival

September or October (date varies)Impact: Moderate

One-day holiday. Mooncakes everywhere. Slight uptick in domestic travel but nothing like Golden Week.

Dragon Boat Festival

June (date varies)Impact: Moderate

Three-day weekend. Dragon boat races on rivers. Good festival atmosphere without extreme crowds.

The Bottom Line

Best overall months: April, May, September, and late October (after Golden Week). Mild weather, manageable crowds, and good prices.

Best value months: November, March, and early December. Shoulder-season prices with decent weather in southern regions.

Avoid if possible: October 1–7 (Golden Week) and the Lunar New Year period. Unless you specifically want the festival experience, the crowds and prices are punishing.

Wild card: January in Harbin for the Ice Festival. Magical but brutally cold (-25°C). Only for the brave.
