How to Ride China's High-Speed Rail as a Foreigner

Everything you need to know before your first bullet train ride

Book with Your Passport

Foreigners must use their passport number when booking train tickets. You can book online via Trip.com up to 15 days in advance. Keep your passport handy at the station.

Station Tips

Arrive 30-45 minutes early. You'll need to pass security and ID check. Follow signs for your waiting room based on your train number. Boarding starts ~15 min before departure.

Luggage Rules

There are no strict weight limits but space is limited. Each passenger can bring items up to 20kg. Overhead racks and space behind the last row seats are available. No checked bags.

Seat Classes

Second class is comfortable and affordable. First class has wider seats and more legroom. Business class (on some routes) offers lie-flat seats similar to airline business class.
