Zhangjiajie, China — Avatar Mountains

Avatar Mountains

Zhangjiajie

Yes, these are the mountains that inspired the floating peaks in Avatar — and no, photos don't do them justice. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a geological freak: thousands of sandstone pillars rising hundreds of metres out of subtropical forest, often wreathed in cloud.

Best Time to Visit

April to June or September to November. Misty mornings create the "floating mountain" effect. Winter is cold but uncrowded with occasional snow. Avoid Chinese public holidays — the park gets overwhelmed.

Daily Budget

Budget–Mid: $50–90/day. The park entry ticket ($35, valid 4 days) is the main cost. Accommodation in Wulingyuan town is $15–40. Food is cheap.

Getting There

Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG) has flights from most major Chinese cities. Train connections are slower — 7 hours from Changsha by regular rail, or fly via Changsha. The park entrance at Wulingyuan is 30 minutes from town by bus.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a geological freak: thousands of sandstone pillars rising hundreds of metres out of subtropical forest, often wreathed in cloud. Add in the world's longest and highest glass bridge, and you've got one of China's most dramatic natural attractions. It's remote and requires effort to reach, but that's part of the charm.

Top Highlights

Glass Bridge & Canyon

Glass Bridge & Canyon

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is 430m long, 300m above the valley floor, and entirely transparent. It's terrifying, exhilarating, and the views are spectacular. Book tickets online — they sell out. There's also a 260m bungy jump if the bridge isn't enough adrenaline.

Avatar Hallelujah Mountain

Avatar Hallelujah Mountain

The Southern Sky Column (officially renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" after the film) is a 1,080m pillar visible from the Yuanjiajie scenic area. Take the Bailong Elevator — a 326m outdoor glass lift built into the cliff face — to reach the upper viewing platforms. Early morning is best for the floating-in-clouds effect.

Local Tips

1

The park is huge — plan at least 2–3 full days. Day one: Yuanjiajie and Avatar Mountain. Day two: Tianzi Mountain and Ten-Mile Gallery. Day three: Golden Whip Stream hiking.

2

The Bailong Elevator queue can hit 2+ hours on busy days. Arrive at the park entrance before 7am.

3

Stay in Wulingyuan town (near the park entrance), not Zhangjiajie city (40km away).

4

Tianmen Mountain (glass walkway and 999 steps) is separate from the national forest park — it's in Zhangjiajie city and worth a day if you have time.

5

Pack rain gear. The park is subtropical and showers arrive without warning, even on sunny mornings.
