Imperial Heritage
Beijing
Beijing is where China's imperial past collides head-on with its superpower present. You'll walk through 600-year-old palace gates in the morning and eat molecular gastronomy in a converted factory by evening.
Best Time to Visit
September to October (clear skies, mild temperatures, golden autumn). Avoid February (Lunar New Year crowds) and July–August (35°C+ with oppressive humidity).
Daily Budget
Mid-range: $80–120/day. Beijing is pricier than most Chinese cities, but world-class sights are under $10 entry. Street food in hutongs is $2–5 for a full meal.
Getting There
Two major airports — Daxing (PKX) is newer and further south, Capital (PEK) is closer to the centre. Both have direct metro links. High-speed rail from Shanghai takes 4.5 hours.

The city sprawls — it's enormous — but the metro is cheap, fast, and covers everything. Give it at least four full days.
Top Highlights

The Forbidden City & Tiananmen Square
The world's largest palace complex — 980 buildings across 72 hectares. Book tickets online in advance (they sell out). Go early, enter from the south gate, and work your way north. Allow 3–4 hours minimum.

Hutong Neighbourhoods
Beijing's ancient alleyway neighbourhoods are the soul of the city. Wander Nanluoguxiang for trendy bars and shops, or escape the crowds in the quieter lanes around Gulou. Rent a bike and get lost — it's the best way to experience them.
Local Tips
Book Great Wall transport in advance — Mutianyu is the best section for most visitors (restored, less crowded, cable car available). Avoid Badaling unless you enjoy queuing.
The Forbidden City requires passport-linked tickets booked online. Walk-ups are not accepted.
Peking duck at Dadong or Da Dong is worth the splurge ($30–40 for two). The cheap knock-offs are not the same.
Air quality varies wildly — check AQI before outdoor plans. September and October are typically the clearest months.
The Summer Palace needs a full half-day. Take the metro to the north gate for a less crowded entry.
