Panda Paradise
Chengdu
Chengdu runs on a different clock. This is the most laid-back major city in China — locals spend hours in tea houses, the food is phenomenal (and searingly spicy), and yes, the giant pandas are as good as you'd hope.
Best Time to Visit
March to June or September to November. Chengdu is overcast most of the year — locals joke they cheer when they see the sun. Winters are mild but grey. Summers are humid.
Daily Budget
Mid-range: $50–90/day. Chengdu is 30–40% cheaper than Beijing/Shanghai. Street food meals for $2–4. Hostels from $8.
Getting There
Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) is the newer airport for most flights. Shuangliu (CTU) still handles some routes. Both connect to the metro. High-speed rail from Xi'an takes 3 hours, from Chongqing 1.5 hours.
Chengdu runs on a different clock. This is the most laid-back major city in China — locals spend hours in tea houses, the food is phenomenal (and searingly spicy), and yes, the giant pandas are as good as you'd hope. It's also the gateway to western Sichuan, Tibet, and some of China's most dramatic mountain scenery. Budget travellers love Chengdu because it's significantly cheaper than Beijing or Shanghai.
Top Highlights

Sichuan Hot Pot
This isn't just a meal — it's a social event. A bubbling pot of chili oil at the centre of the table, platters of thinly sliced meat, fresh vegetables, and tofu around the edges. You cook it yourself and the spice level is adjustable (ask for yuanyang — half spicy, half mild). Budget about $10–15 per person at a good local place.

Tea Culture & People's Park
Chengdu's tea houses are where the city's soul lives. People's Park is the best place to experience it — locals playing mahjong, getting ear-cleaning treatments, and drinking jasmine tea for hours. Grab a bamboo chair, order a covered-bowl tea (盖碗茶) for $2, and stay as long as you like.
Local Tips
Visit the Panda Base as early as possible — gates open at 7:30am. Pandas are most active in the morning and nap all afternoon. Book tickets online the day before.
Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alleys) is beautiful but very touristy. Go early morning for photos, then eat elsewhere.
For the best hot pot, follow the locals to Xiaolongkan or Shu Jiuxiang. Avoid the flashy restaurants near tourist areas.
Chengdu is the base for trips to Jiuzhaigou (stunning alpine lakes), Mount Emei (sacred Buddhist mountain), and Leshan Giant Buddha.
The ear-cleaning service in People's Park sounds weird but is genuinely relaxing. About $5.
