Garden City
Suzhou
If Hangzhou is the lake city, Suzhou is the garden city. Its nine UNESCO-listed classical gardens are masterpieces of landscape design — miniature worlds of rock, water, and carefully framed views.
Best Time to Visit
March to May (spring garden blooms) or September to November (comfortable temps, clear skies). Summer is hot and humid. Winter gardens have a stark, moody beauty but it's cold.
Daily Budget
Mid-range: $50–80/day. Garden entry fees are $3–10 each. Accommodation is cheaper than Shanghai. Excellent canal-side restaurants for $10–15 per person.
Getting There
No airport — fly to Shanghai and take the high-speed rail (25 minutes from Hongqiao, $8). Also connected to Hangzhou (1.5h), Nanjing (1h), and Beijing (5h) by HSR.
If Hangzhou is the lake city, Suzhou is the garden city. Its nine UNESCO-listed classical gardens are masterpieces of landscape design — miniature worlds of rock, water, and carefully framed views. Beyond the gardens, Suzhou has a 2,500-year-old canal network (older than Venice), a thriving silk tradition, and some of the Yangtze Delta's best-preserved water towns. Just 25 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed rail, it's an easy add-on to any itinerary.

Canal Towns
Suzhou's canals predate Venice by centuries. Pingjiang Road follows an ancient waterway lined with teahouses, silk shops, and bridges. For a less-touristy experience, take a day trip to Tongli or Luzhi — traditional water towns with genuine local life, whitewashed houses, and stone bridges.

Classical Gardens
The Humble Administrator's Garden is the largest and most famous — a labyrinth of pavilions, covered walkways, lotus ponds, and moon gates. The Lingering Garden and Master of the Nets Garden are equally stunning but smaller and less crowded. These aren't just pretty — they're philosophical statements about humanity's relationship with nature.
Local Tips
Visit the Humble Administrator's Garden at opening time (7:30am) before tour groups arrive. After 10am, it's a different experience entirely.
Buy a Suzhou Garden Card ($25) if visiting 3+ gardens — it includes entry to all major gardens and saves money.
Suzhou-style noodles are the local breakfast. Try a bowl at Tongdexing (同得兴) — the broth is clear, light, and delicate.
The Suzhou Museum (free) was designed by I.M. Pei and is itself a masterpiece of modern architecture that echoes classical garden design.
Take an evening boat ride along Shantang Street — the canal is lit with lanterns and the atmosphere is magical.
