Guilin, China — Karst Wonderland

Karst Wonderland

Guilin

The karst mountains of Guilin have been painted, photographed, and printed on the ¥20 banknote for good reason — they're some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. The Li River cruise to Yangshuo is the main event, but the surrounding countryside rewards exploration: rice terraces at Longji, rock climbing at Moon Hill, and cycling through countryside so green it hurts your eyes.

Best Time to Visit

April to October for green landscapes. April–May is rice terrace planting season (bright green). September–October is harvest season (golden). Avoid February (cold and grey) and July peak heat.

Daily Budget

Budget–Mid: $40–80/day. Guilin and Yangshuo are affordable. Guesthouse rooms from $15. Local meals $3–6. The Li River cruise is the big-ticket item at $40–60.

Getting There

Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL) has domestic and some international routes. High-speed rail connects to Guangzhou (3h), Shenzhen (3.5h), and Nanning (1.5h). Yangshuo is 1.5 hours from Guilin by bus or river.

Top Highlights

Longji Rice Terraces

Longji Rice Terraces

Carved into steep mountainsides over 700 years ago, these terraces are staggering in scale. The Ping'an and Dazhai viewpoints offer panoramic views. Stay overnight in a traditional Zhuang or Yao village guesthouse for the sunrise. Two hours from Guilin by bus.

Li River & Traditional Fishing

Li River & Traditional Fishing

The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo (4–5 hours) passes through a continuous scroll of karst peaks, bamboo groves, and water buffalo. At Yangshuo, rent a bike or e-scooter and explore the countryside. The ¥20 note view is at Xingping — take the short bamboo raft ride for the photo.

Local Tips

1

Skip the overpriced government Li River cruise ($60) and take the Xingping to Nine Horses bamboo raft instead ($20) — same views, less time, quarter the price.

2

Rent an e-scooter in Yangshuo ($8/day) and ride to Moon Hill, Yulong River, and the countryside villages. The roads are flat and scenic.

3

Beer Fish (啤酒鱼) is Yangshuo's signature dish — fresh river fish cooked in beer with tomatoes and peppers. Eat it on West Street.

4

Longji Rice Terraces are best visited as an overnight trip. Day trips from Guilin are exhausting and don't let you see sunrise.

5

Avoid the "Impression Liu Sanjie" show unless you love large-scale outdoor performances — it's expensive ($50+) and opinions are divided.
