East Meets West
Hong Kong
Hong Kong operates as a Special Administrative Region with its own immigration, currency, and internet (no Great Firewall here — Google and WhatsApp work fine). For travellers, it's the perfect bookend to a China trip: use it as a visa-free entry/exit point, stock up on international brands, and eat some of the best Cantonese food on the planet.
Best Time to Visit
October to December (clear, warm, low humidity — the best months). March to April is also good. Avoid June to September (typhoon season, extreme humidity, 34°C+).
Daily Budget
Mid-range: $100–180/day. Hong Kong is expensive by Asian standards. Budget accommodation starts at $30. Street food from $3. Star Ferry is $0.40.
Getting There
Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is a major global hub. The Airport Express train reaches Central in 24 minutes. You can also enter from mainland China via high-speed rail to West Kowloon station, or by bus/ferry from Shenzhen and Macau.

The city packs more into its vertical space than seems physically possible — neon-lit streets, jungle-covered peaks, and a harbour skyline that never gets old.
Top Highlights

Street Food & Markets
Hong Kong's street food is legendary. Temple Street Night Market in Kowloon has dai pai dong (open-air food stalls) serving wonton noodles, curry fish balls, and egg waffles. For dim sum, try Tim Ho Wan — the world's cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant. Sham Shui Po is the emerging foodie district.

Victoria Harbour & Star Ferry
The Star Ferry has been crossing the harbour since 1888, and at $0.40 it's the best-value scenic ride in the world. Take it at sunset for the skyline light show. For the aerial view, ride the Peak Tram to Victoria Peak — though the free view from Lugard Road trail around the peak is better than the paid observation deck.
Local Tips
Get an Octopus card at the airport — it works on all public transport, 7-Eleven stores, and most vending machines. Way easier than buying individual tickets.
Hong Kong counts as a separate region for China's 240-hour transit visa. You can use it as your "third country" for a visa-free mainland China stopover.
The Dragon's Back hiking trail on Hong Kong Island is spectacular — ocean views, ridgeline walking, and only 90 minutes from Central. The best outdoor activity in the city.
Skip the Peak Tram queue (often 90+ minutes) and take bus 15 from Central to the Peak instead. Same destination, no wait.
Dim sum is best before 11am. After noon, the good stuff is gone. Maxim's Palace in City Hall is a classic cart-service dim sum hall.
